The fabrics used to craft The Cherrada Dress were produced by Tohsang Cotton Village, a small-scale cotton producer that comprises local workers and artisans of the surrounding Khongchiam communities, giving them work, additional income support and helping them to carry on doing what they love. The support, however, is reciprocal, only through our local partners traditional skills and knowledge are we able to use their naturally-grown sustainable cotton, where no additional inputs of water, fertiliser or pesticide is required, as well as source the perfect organic ingredients for our eco-friendly, sustainable dyes.
The natural Burnt Sienna dye is created by Tien, a local artisan, who creates the colour by using bark from the locally-grown Velvet Tamarind tree. Once the dyeing of the fabric has taken place, the weaving process begins. Prairie, the manager of Tohsang Cotton Village, shares the profits of the fabric production by outsourcing the weaving to women artisans from the local communities, who own a traditional loom at home. Meaning additional income and empowerment for local women without having to leave the day-to-day running of the household.
To ensure your item retains its charm and beauty for many years to come, we recommend the following:
Take care to avoid extreme heat and direct sunlight when drying or storing the product as this may cause colour fading and/or shrinkage. We recommend storing the product in a cool, shaded and dry place at all times.
Dry-clean or hand-wash only. Hand-wash inside out in cool water. Use gentle/low concentration detergent and avoid bleaches, heavy-duty detergents and stain removers. If using machine hand-wash, use a fine-mesh net for extra protection from snagging. Iron inside out on a medium to high heat or place a thin cloth on top before ironing.
As with all naturally dyed products, some colour variation within and between items is normal. Naturally dyed products will always bleed slightly so please wash with similar colours (for first 2-3 washes it’s recommended to wash separately).
All fabrics woven by hand may come with small knots, yarn pulls or short pieces of thread – these irregularities do not affect the quality or future durability of the product. We feel these irregularities only add to the uniqueness and individualism of our products.
