Handmade pure silk mini dress with floral Ikat design in Sky Blue

The Chermarn mini dress in sky blue is handmade by artisans on a traditional loom using 100% pure Mulberry silk, sustainably produced in small-scale community sericulture projects in Thailand. Floral dress design created by a local Thai artisan using the Ikat tie-dye method. The use of hand-reeled sustainable silk adds a subtle texturing to the fabric.
Statement puffed sleeves with self-tie detailing offers a modern twist to the Ikat piece. The dress is mini-length with a low cut neckline at the front and back and invisible back zip fastening. Complete the look with your favourite pair of heels, or pick a statement accessary, a waist-cinching belt for instance, to achieve a chic look for that next special occasion. Ethical, handmade clothes by artisans for Rare & Fair.
Our model, Toma, is wearing size XS or UK6. Her measurements are: Height 5'7", Bust 32.5", Waist 24", Hips 35" . See 'Size Guide' for further guidance.
The Story
Our pure silk Chermarn dress is ethically handmade using Ikat sustainable silk. Ikat weaving, known locally as “Mudmee”, is a traditional tie-dye method and the oldest form of pattern weaving in Thailand. The desired pattern is created by hand-binding pure silk threads with tight wrapping before the dyeing and weaving process commences. This binding process takes time and the extreme skill of the weaver, both of which make Ikat silks prized by textile collectors the world over, slow fashion at it's finest! From past to present, the Mudmee plays a crucial role as a cultural symbol, reflecting the beliefs, traditions and values of those creating it through their pattern designs. Cultural story telling through textile art.

Our artisan, Somwang, and her weaving group, Japoh Silk, work extremely hard to preserve this ancient technique using sustainable methods. Constantly looking for new ideas and contemporary patterns, as well as maintaining some of the traditional Ikat silk designs passed on through her family generations. The floral Ikat silk piece represents a great success for her - a modern rose pattern with a traditional touch of a pagoda’s top.
By purchasing The Chermarn Dress, you not only purchase a beautiful item of handmade clothing that comes with its own story to tell, but also a piece of pure silk textile art, that helps support the tradition of Ikat dyeing for many years to come. Thank you!
Fabric Care
To ensure your sustainable silk retains its charm and beauty for many years to come, we recommend the following:
Care
Take care to avoid extreme heat and direct sunlight when storing the product as this may cause colour fading and/or shrinkage. We recommend storing the product in a cool, shaded and dry place at all times.
Cleaning
Dry-Clean only. For extra care we recommend gentle dry-clean with hydrocarbon solvents, however, general dry-clean is also possible.
Natural/Hand Dye
As with all natural/hand dyed products, some colour variation within and between items is normal. Natural/hand dyed products may bleed slightly when wet, so please follow cleaning instructions carefully.
Handwoven Fabric
Please note, all fabrics woven by hand may come with small knots, yarn pulls or short pieces of thread – these irregularities do not affect the quality or future durability of the product. They act as an authenticity mark of fabric woven by hand and adds to the uniqueness and individualism of our products.
