The fabrics used to craft The Cherrada Dress were produced by Tohsang Cotton Village, a small-scale cotton producer that comprises local workers and artisans of the surrounding Khongchiam communities, giving them work, additional income support and helping them to carry on doing what they love. The support, however, is reciprocal, only through our local partners traditional skills and knowledge are we able to use their naturally-grown sustainable cotton, where no additional inputs of water, fertiliser or pesticide is required, as well as source the perfect organic ingredients for our eco-friendly, sustainable dyes.
Tien, the young artisan behind the dyeing process, uses traditional techniques but incorporates new creative ideas. He created the olive green used in The Cherrada Dress by combining locally-sourced myrobalan and indigo leaves. The herbal Mryrobalan tree grows naturally and is common to the area. Just before the dyeing process takes place, members of the community will go out and gather the Mryrobalan leaves from nearby woodland. The Indigo shrubs are grown closer to home, directly in Tohsang cotton village in fact, where the dyeing and weaving process takes place.
Once the dyeing of the fabric is complete, the weaving process begins, with the Tohsang Cotton Village weavers, Chan and Pit, working closely together on wooden looms. A process where the only energy input is manpower.
To ensure your item retains its charm and beauty for many years to come, we recommend the following:
Take care to avoid extreme heat and direct sunlight when drying or storing the product as this may cause colour fading and/or shrinkage. We recommend storing the product in a cool, shaded and dry place at all times.
Dry-clean or hand-wash only. Hand-wash inside out in cool water. Use gentle/low concentration detergent and avoid bleaches, heavy-duty detergents and stain removers. If using machine hand-wash, use a fine-mesh net for extra protection from snagging. Iron inside out on a medium to high heat or place a thin cloth on top before ironing.
As with all naturally dyed products, some colour variation within and between items is normal. Naturally dyed products will always bleed slightly so please wash with similar colours (for first 2-3 washes it’s recommended to wash separately).
All fabrics woven by hand may come with small knots, yarn pulls or short pieces of thread – these irregularities do not affect the quality or future durability of the product. We feel these irregularities only add to the uniqueness and individualism of our products.
